Dowry
For many years, dowry has been a problem mainly among Indian communities.
Where, if a girl wants to get married, she has to pay the amount demanded by the guy. It is as if he wants the girl and her money.
The more educated the girl is, the more she must pay.
This is a violation of verses 2:229,236-237. These verses do not only applicable for marriage but also in terms of divorce.
2:229 Divorces may be retracted twice. Thereafter you shall allow them to stay in your home amicably (if they so desire), or allow them to go amicably. You shall not take back anything you had given them. If they fear the violation of God’s law, then they incur no sin if the wife forfeits anything voluntarily. These are God’s law. If anyone transgresses God’s laws, then these are the wicked.
2:236 You commit no sin if you divorce the women before you touch them, and before setting the dowry for them. In this case, you shall pay them a compensation in accordance with your means; the rich as he can afford, and the poor as he can afford; an equitable compensation. This is an incumbent duty upon the righteous.
2:237 If you divorce them before you touch them but after you had set the dowry, the compensation shall be half the dowry, unless they willingly forfeit the compensation or the groom forfeits the whole dowry. To forfeit is more righteous. Do not abandon the amicable relations among you, for God is seer of everything you do.
Yes, you can take from the girl only if she willingly gives. You should not force them. Does not matter whether the amount is affordable or not.
What happens in this world is totally opposite from what God has ordered. Giving dowry to the groom was practiced by the wealthy Indians because they can afford so. But, today the poor are also forced to give dowry to the groom. That is why some women have given up hope in marriage.
On the other side, some who are married without giving any dowry or paid only little amount are abused by the husbands or by the in-laws.
Paying dowry not only applicable to free unmarried women but also to divorced, slave women. Does not matter who, you should treat them equitably. Equitable, in the sense not to marry four women but only one. As god also strictly forbids polygamy.
In surah 4, An-Nisa, God prohibits men to marry certain women.
In 4:25 and 5:5, He explains about whom the men shall marry. No matter whom among the Muslims, Jewish or Christians (People of the Book), you should pay them their due dowry.
Again, these (4:4, 19-21) verses also have been violated.
Even Prophet paid dowry to his wife. (33:50-51).
So, are they not ashamed to ‘ask’ dowry from women when God is ordering the men to PAY? Paying dowry to women you are marrying is one of the salat (commitment) said God.
Leave the pagans, as they never accepted the teachings of the Qur’an.
How about the ‘so called’ Muslims?
Following are some example of their demands or I call it ‘jokes’ towards the family of the women they are marrying:
My Father’s Sister
This man asked to set up a shop for him in order to marry my aunt.
My dad chased him out.
At the end, my aunt married a non demanding husband.
My Mom’s Sister
My aunt married my uncle without paying any dowry to him. He, till today says ‘You are a useless, you had no money when I married you.’ My aunt set up her own school canteen business. Now, she has her own money to spend for herself and her children.
Other scenarios; Dowries in terms of:
a. Car
b. House
c. Gold Jewelleries
d. Cash
Results:
The women, who are brave enough to fight back their abusive husband and in-laws, are the one who take further steps to continue their lives by either working and paying their husbands or happily leave (divorce) them.
BUT the one, who is not brave at all, ends her life there and then.
And the one, in the middle is the one who is scared of marriage because of this word DOWRY and its consequences.
Conclusion:
This is God’s law that men MUST PAY but not to ask dowry from their wives.
